Roulette Worldwide

The game of Roulette has come a long way since its early beginnings in 17th Century France. It has been banned at times, or deemed suitable only for royalty. But in this day and age it has become a game for all players, in almost all countries of the world.

The town of Las Vegas was in the forefront of this change, back in the 1950s. British law began to change only in the 1960s and casino gambling is now re-established there, too. The first legal casinos opened in Australia in 1973, and in the 1990s in New Zealand.

The Koran forbids gambling, but casinos are permitted in Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia, while in sub-Saharan Africa, gambling is allowed in Zambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Lesotho, Swaziland and Sun City in South Africa. In the Far East the Portuguese colony of Macao has traditionally provided casinos for the gamblers of Hong Kong, where casino gaming is banned.

Many cities in Latin America boast casinos, and the resorts in the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands exploit the American tourist trade. Cruise ships in the Caribbean and trans-Atlantic liners carry floating casinos, while even cross-Channel ferries, plying the waters between Britain and the Continent of Europe, have rudimentary gaming rooms with Roulette wheels and Blackjack tables.

Nothing can beat the exhilaration of walking down ‘The Strip’, or playing in the glamorous surroundings of a real casino. Some of the more famous locations are:

USA: Las Vegas

The city of Las Vegas in Nevada, USA, overtook Monte Carlo as the centre of the gambling world in the second half of the 20th century. Most of Nevada is an empty wasteland of deserts and mountains, and some 80% is owned by the US Federal government, which uses much of it for military exercises. However, gambling gives the state an annual turnover that is greater than the gross national product of many countries.

Big time gambling came to Nevada in 1947, when the mobster Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo on the outskirts of what was then the small town of Las Vegas. When Siegel was killed on the orders of ‘Lucky’ Luciano, the Mafia took over the ailing Flamingo, which soon began to show a profit. Realising that casinos were a perfect – and profitable - way to launder illegal money, the Mafia opened the Desert Inn in 1950, and the Sands and the Sahara in 1952.

The casinos found they could attract huge crowd up from Los Angeles by putting on top entertainment acts, and more money poured into Las Vegas when Fidel Castro took over Cuba in 1959 and kicked the Mafia out. Gambling quickly spread to Reno, Lake Tahoe, Laughlin, Elko, Carson City and other small resorts in Nevada.

In the mid-1960s, after being forced to sell his share of the airline TWA, Howard Hughes brought respectable money to Las Vegas. Other companies followed, including the film and entertainment corporation MGM.

Today Las Vegas is the most popular roulette gambling resort in the world. Gamblers from every country make their way there under their own steam or are flown in on casino-sponsored junkets. It is worth visiting Las Vegas simply as a tourist to see the Strip and the neon extravaganza of Glitter Gulch, but if you can join in the action, so much the better.

Atlantic City

Until 1976 Las Vegas had it all its own way. In that year, however, a state-wide referendum in New Jersey legalized gambling in the East Coast resort of Atlantic City.

Atlantic City had been attracting holiday-makers from New York and other eastern cities since the 1840s, but the advent of cheap air travel meant that Easterners began to go further a field, and Atlantic City went into decline. With the opening of the first casino in 1978, Atlantic City’s fortunes began to revive. Many East Coast towns offer bus trips to Atlantic City for a nominal fee.

Europe

German laws permit gambling in the old spa resorts, and the casino at Baden-Baden, which has been in existence for over 200 years, it still open. Italy has four small casinos - at San Remo, Venice, St Vincent and Campione d’Italia - and it is fashionable to be seen at the summer casino at the Lido in Venice. Austria’s casinos are owned by the Cercle Prive’ in the Palace Esterhazy.

Britain too has its share of casinos. There are now many small provincial casinos located in London – Mayfair, and along Park Lane, where they attract money from rich foreign nationals who are prohibited from gambling in their own countries.

But France is the spiritual home of Roulette and it remains eminent in European gambling, with its casinos at Deauville, Biarritz and along the Riviera.

A word of Warning

It makes sense to play roulette in respected and well known casinos.

Traditionally, back-street casinos have been known to use mechanical devices, usually involving electro-magnets and gaffed, lead-filled balls, to fix roulette wheels against the customer. The current could be switched on when a punter had a large amount running on one of the even-money chances to encourage the ball into a losing slot.

This isn’t to say all ‘small’ casinos are dodgy – but why put your money at greater risk than you have to?

Cruise Ships

Many cruise liners offer an ‘in-house’ casino as part of their entertainment. But be aware – these are not always good value for the roulette player. In fact, these casinos are absolute gold mines for the cruise lines, for these reasons:

Ships that sail in international waters are not subject to the same rules and regulations as land (or riverboat) casinos.
The people who are on cruises have expendable income and they’re geared up for fun and excitement.

What more could a casino want from a captive audience?

Cruise line operators do not have to be concerned with creating a climate for return business or brand loyalty. In most cases the vacation is a one-time, once-in-a-while, or at best, a once-a-year fling. There are thousands of new people with fresh money booked on every cruise.

By all means, play roulette in a cruise ship casino if you want: have a little fun. But be aware that the strict land regulations don’t necessarily apply and the odds could be stacked against you. Even if the cruise liner is strictly above board, remember that the casino is just one of many, many activities available. Go and have some other fun.

Whatever you decide in regard to cruise ships, at all costs, avoid the unregulated ‘gambling ships’. These are also known as ‘cruises to nowhere’ and are a relatively new phenomenon.

Gambling ships are ships that have one purpose only: casino gambling. They pick up people at a port in a non-gaming state, travel out to sea until they are in international waters, and then let the games begin. The general feeling of industry insiders is that most of these ‘cruises to nowhere’ are shady operations with low payouts compared to land-based casinos.

On-line Roulette

In this electronic age, the impact and availability of on-line roulette gambling can’t be overlooked or ignored. The advantages of playing on-line Roulette are:

Convenience – you can play roulette from your own home, in your own time, and you can ‘buy in’ credits straight from your credit card.
Fast play – no waiting for chips to be bought in or cashed up.
Flexible – you can choose whether to play European roulette or American roulette wheels, with other roulette players or alone.

The disadvantages are:

Because you can access your credit card to buy in, you can spend too much, too quickly. It can be harder to give yourself a break. To walk away and have a ‘think’ about what you’re doing.
On-line roulette gambling is more vulnerable to fraud. If this is the way you want to play roulette, ensure you play at a reputable e-casino.

An online casino that has been around for a few years is likely to be a reputable casino with efficient customer support, high security, reliable payouts, and serving a large number of members.
