True Roulette Stories

William Nelson Damborough, a famous roulette winner from last century, was able to predict the path of the ball with only his eye and his brain. He used to place his bets at incredible speed after the croupier had spun the wheel. Damborough cleaned up regularly in Monte Carlo before the First World War, winning £64,000 in a single month in 1910. The pace of the wheel and the roulette game may have been more conducive then, but it would still require something of a human computer.

Talking of computers… armed with modem computer and battery technology, the Eudaemonic group managed to conceal a computer in the heel of a shoe*, inputting data for the velocities of ball and wheel by tapping a toe-switch and receiving a signal indicating the group of eight numbers into which the ball would fall through vibrating pads in the heel.

They demonstrated that, although tiny differences in variables such as the way the croupier launched the ball had an enormous impact on the final result, the action of a roulette ball could be predicted using conventional physics.

Computers are not, of course, allowed into casinos and it remains exceptionally difficult to use such technology without detection.

Joe and Dolly Hornick of Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania, could be the luckiest couple in the world, at least when it comes to winning money. Last June they won $206,000 in the Pennsylvania Lottery. Three weeks later they won another $71,000. And they had previous lottery scores of $2.5 million in 1989 and $68,000 in 1997?

There's more to their good monetary fortune: After their June lottery bonanza they visited the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City and between the two of them hit jackpots of $480 (twice), $980, and $1,375. They list other slot scores of $9,970, $10,700, and $2,000 in recent years.

Here's the kicker: On a trip to Florida they stopped off at a gas station, bought some scratch-off lottery tickets, and won $6,673.

Joe would only give this tip: ‘It takes a buck and a lot of luck.’

In January 1994 Christopher Boyd, a British punter who had never before played roulette, flew to Las Vegas with £147,000 raised from savings and sold assets. He persuaded the Binion’s Horseshoe casino to waive its limit on even-money bets and block off the American double zero for one spin. After one practice spin he staked the whole pile on red: it came up number 7, he won and left the table intending never to gamble again. As one onlooker remarked, ‘He had a lot of style.’
